Easter attacks may be due to anti-drugs campaign – President

President Media Division

President Maithripala Sirisena today suggested a link between the Easter Sunday attacks and his campaign against narcotics.

Drawing a “close relationship” between extremism and drug trafficking, Sirisena reportedly said the Government’s campaign against drugs, spearheaded and overseen by him personally, may have played a role in last Sunday’s bombings that killed over 250 people.

According to reports, the President made these remarks while speaking to media heads this morning.

The Easter attacks have been attributed to the previously little known National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ), though State Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardene told journalists earlier this week that it was in fact a splinter group of the NTJ. The Islamic State (IS) had also claimed responsibility through its Amaq news agency.
