Army troops are deployed in the troubled Kuliyapitiya area after fresh violence forced the authorities to re-impose a curfew that was lifted at 6 am today.
The curfew is in effect in Kuliyapitiya, Hettipola, Bingiriya, and Dummalasuriya police areas, Police headquarters said.
The Ministry of Defense confirmed that troops had been rushed in later in the afternoon as the rioting escalated.
Residents reported seeing tires burning in the streets.
Other reports said the Attampitiya mosque had been attacked and several shops, as well as one eatery, was ransacked.
Curfew was also imposed on the Rasanayakepura and Kobeigane regions.
These areas are in the North Western Province, North and West of Kurunegala town.
