The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) will announce its candidate for the upcoming presidential election at the National People’s Rally to be held at the Galle Face Green on 18 August, JVP Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath said.
Speaking to the media in Colombo yesterday (12), Herath said, having considered recommendations made by religious leaders including the Mahanayaka Theros and the Cardinal, the JVP will create an alternative force to develop the country.
“We are ready to defeat both old thieves and new thieves and present a candidate who can build the country through a policy framework and protect its people. Our candidate does not have cases in court, nor has he or she been proven guilty before any court. The JVP will present a leadership with financial discipline, maturity and economic and political policies that can build the country,” Herath said.
The MP further said that successive governments lacked discipline in both financial and administrative matters.
“We are ready to establish this force against all administrations of the past which got the country stuck in poverty and a debt trap for 71 years,” the MP added.
