PSC probing Easter attacks not ‘political theatre’ – Harshana

Gampaha district UNP Parliamentarian Harshana Rajakaruna

The Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) probing the Easter Sunday attacks is not political theatre, Gampaha district UNP parliamentarian Harshana Rajakaruna said, responding to comments made by President Sirisena earlier this week.

Members of Parliament, said Rajakaruna, like the security forces, have an obligation to investigate the incident and reveal the truth to the public.

Rajakaruna made these remarks at a media briefing held at Temple Trees yesterday (26), not long after President Maithripala Sirisena had told reporters that the PSC is a drama “written, produced and directed at Temple Trees and enacted before the Media.”

The MP further said that the PSC was appointed by the Speaker after members including Opposition MPs had handed him a written letter requesting for a select committee.

“The Opposition refused to join the committee, and now they are criticising it. We just wanted to reveal the truth, and we have also invited the media to the committee for this purpose,” he said, adding that even the Prime Minister was willing to come before the PSC if he is summoned and extend his full support.

Commenting on international assistance sought in the investigations, Rajakaruna that any foreign involvement will be towards eradicating terrorism.

“We only involve them in our investigations to eradicate this terrorism and not for anything else. We need the help of the international community since this organisation is linked with international terrorism,” he said.
