Efforts to form another National Government and to expand the Cabinet of Ministers are unlikely to succeed as President Maithripala Sirisena has vetoed the idea, sources close to the President told RepublicNext this morning (27).
At least four Sri Lanka Freedom Party Members of Parliament have reportedly expressed their willingness to join the Government.
Reports say Lakshman Seneviratne, Wijith Wijayamuni Zoysa and Piyasena Gamage are among those who are said to be willing to join Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s Cabinet.
The United National Front Government has been exploring the possibility of forming a fresh National Government as it would give it the opportunity to increase the number of Ministers. The Constitution limits the number of Cabinet portfolios to 30 unless the Government is made up of more than one single party.
Sources from the PM’s office said that a letter was sent to the President with this proposal a few days ago.
The United National Party has been unofficially saying that there are 18 SLFPers willing to join a new National Government. But SLFP spokesmen have debunked the statement.
