Parliament was adjourned until 17 September today citing a low turnout of Government MPs, forcing the day’s sittings to end at 11.45am.
Today’s sittings, scheduled to go on till 7.00pm, ended in just 45 minutes. Yesterday, too, saw questions go unanswered due to the absence of relevant Ministers.
Asked for an explanation, a source affiliated with the United National Party (UNP) leadership said a number of MPs had gone to Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa’s public rally in Kurunegala yesterday afternoon.
The source insisted, however, that only one Cabinet Minister had taken part (Chandrani Bandara) with all other participants being either non-Cabinet Ministers of backbencher MPs.
