The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is prepared to lead a people’s movement with a “strong candidate” in the upcoming presidential elections if the 20th amendment to the Constitution is not passed, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said.

Speaking at a rally held in Anuradhapura yesterday to mark the 48th commemoration of the fallen ‘April Heroes’ of the 1971 insurrection, Silva expressed his confidence in the party’s plans for the upcoming polls.

“If the 20th amendment is not passed and the executive presidency is not abolished, and a snap presidential election is announced, we are ready to enter such an election with a strong candidate and a people’s movement behind us,” he said.
