The Leader of the Nava Sama Samaja Party Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne who is part of the New Democratic Front (NDF) said that the main reason for the election loss was because racist and fascist ideas propagated by the opposition was not effectively countered.

Addressing a press conference in Colombo today he added that the other reason for the loss was due to lack of work done at the grass-root level to cover each electorate although rallies were held at the top level.

He said that all the party leaders who were with the alliance before the election should not turn away themselves from the thousands of people who voted for them for the continuity of equality and justice, especially the minority groups such as Muslims, Tamils and Christians who seek some sort of relief from their troubles.

Karunaratne said that they did not do any mistakes nor did deceive the people but talked about and fought for the continuity of equality and justice in the past four years.

“But we have now seen the ways of Gota if these things continue we will all be able to experience a fascist regime,” he added.

Further, he said opposition parties in the parliament should decide about the leader of the opposition and the Speaker should give the final decision according to the parliament traditions.

He said he likes Ranil Wickremesinghe to be the leader of the UNP as he has done work in the past and as he is the most experienced.

But he said that it does not mean that Sajith Premadasa is not suitable for the leadership but is the decision that UNP should make internally.

He also said that he had to spend a considerable amount of time with Premadasa prior to the elections advising and helping him to develop his way of thinking about the national crisis which he accepted and developed.
