Despite problems, the country has seen “massive development” this year, Minister of Internal and Home Affairs Wajira Abeywardana said.

Since Government income was greater than expenditure, he told journalists yesterday, it was possible to invest a large sum of state funds on development projects.

For the first time in the country’s history, development projects are being implemented in every electorate in the country under the guidance of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, said Abeywardana.

“Those days, a public representative received only about Rs. 5 million to Rs. 10 million a year to implement development proposals.  Already 25,000 projects have been started in 25 districts. The total number of projects to be implemented is more than 40,000,” he said.

The Minister said that each of the public representatives receives an additional Rs. 50 million for the development of their seats and that money has been utilized for the projects by the ministry through the coordination of District Secretariats and Divisional Secretariats.

“Funds were allocated for all Buddhist temples and other places of worship as never before in the history of Sri Lanka under the guidance of the Prime Minister, ” he added.
