Those responsible for the Easter Sunday attacks cannot wash their hands by laying the blame on IGP Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Ministry Secretary Hemasiri Fernando alone, UNP parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra said.
Addressing the media at Temple Trees today (10 July), Premachandra said that yesterday’s court decision to release the two officials on bail was historic as it proved judicial independence under the present government.
“Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayarathne gave a historic decision yesterday without any political or executive influence. Not just yesterday’s order, but also during the past 52 days we saw how the courts made fair rulings despite the decisions of the executive to the contrary. We hear that when the previous government was in power, the final court decision was given over the phone by the former President,” MP said.
Premachandra further said it was evident yesterday that the Presidential Committee on the Easter Sunday attacks is a committee that isn’t even gazetted.
“As the Minister of Defence and the Commander of Armed Forces, it is obvious that the President has also failed in his duties. It was apparent from the witnesses accounts of the IGP and the former Defence Ministry Secretary,” Premachandra added.
The MP also said that if the Prime Minister is summoned to the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) he will go there and “tell the committee what he knows courageously”. The MP invited President Maithripala Sirisena to do the same.
