The Sri Lankan Embassy in Washington DC warmly welcomed a Mine Detection Dog (MDD) named Yankee last Wednesday (12), when she paid a surprise visit to the Embassy.
Yankee made an outstanding contribution as an MDD to the demining operations in the Northern and Eastern provinces for nearly seven years.
Yankee, a 10-year-old female German Shephard was donated to the Sri Lanka Army by the Marshall Legacy Institute (MLI) in the U.S to “sniff out” landmines and other dangerous explosives in communities throughout the North and East of Sri Lanka.
Two years ago, Yankee and her handler were also awarded the ‘MDD Team of the Year ‘at MLI’s prestigious Clearing the Path Gala in Washington for their achievements.
Retiring after saving countless lives of Sri Lankans and improving their livelihoods, Yankee now serves as MLI’s Canine Ambassador in the U.S.
The US government has thus far donated approximately USD 60 million for demining operations in Sri Lanka and has committed attritional funding to help Sri Lanka become mine-free in the next few years.
