President Maithripala Sirisena has expressed concern over issues that have arisen due to delays in clearances carried out by the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) when dispatching police and security forces personnel to United Nations Peace Keeping Missions.
In a discussion held with HRCSL officials yesterday (20), the President said that Sri Lankan forces are in high demand for the peacekeeping missions due to their discipline and valour.
Sirisena urged the HRCSL to resolve the issue through common understanding and liaison between relevant parties.
The undue delay in deploying officers to UN peace missions will also have a negative impact on the country’s economy, he said, adding that it could tarnish Sri Lanka’s image.
Sri Lanka has been sending troops to UN peace missions since the year 2004.
