Higher number of Career diplomats as Heads of missions

The number of Career Diplomats appointed as Heads of Missions has risen to more than half, a Press Release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says.

Of the 13 new Ambassadors and High Commissioners appointed to take up office in the coming weeks, nine are career officers.

The Committee on High Posts has approved appointments of thirteen individuals who were nominated by President Maithripala Sirisena, as Heads of Sri Lanka Missions overseas.

Sri Lanka currently maintains 52 High Commissions/Embassies overseas

Along with these appointments, the percentage of ‘career diplomats’  who will head Sri Lanka Missions overseas specifically will increase from 37% up to to 54%.

Twenty-three of the 27 Heads of Missions appointed this year, have been from the Sri Lanka Foreign Service.

The career officers approved by the High Posts Committee are:

  • A.S. Khan, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Nigeria,
  • U.L. Mohammed Jauhar, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Kuwait,
  • A.S.U Mendis, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Korea
  • S. Shanika Dissanayake, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Jordan
  • W.G.S. Prasanna, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Vietnam
  • Himalee Arunatilaka, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Nepal
  • Lakshitha Ratnayaka, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Cuba
  • P.R.S. Sugeeshwara Gunaratna, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Ethiopia
  • D.P.C.W. Karunaratne, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Lebanon.

The Committee on high posts has also approved the  J. C. Weliamuna, President’s Counsel and prominent human rights activist-lawyer as High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Australia, former Air Force Commander Air Chief Marshal Kapila Jayampathy (Rtd.) as High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Malaysia, Nimal Karunaratne, former Additional Surveyor General as Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Maldives, and Kithsiri Athulathmudali, international business consultant and businessman as Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Qatar as Heads of Mission.
