Australia and Sri Lanka to combat human smuggling

The Sixth Meeting of Australia-Sri Lanka Joint Working Group was concluded last week in Canberra, Australia.

The Sixth Meeting of Australia-Sri Lanka Joint Working Group (JWG), a programme initiated with the intention of combating People Smuggling and other Transnational Crime was concluded last week in Canberra, Australia.

A Sri Lankan delegation consisting Defence Secretary General S.H.S. Kottegoda (Rtd) participated in the programme.

Addressing the event, Kottegoda stressed on the importance of JWG as a platform which resolves many issues of concern with regard to people smuggling and transnational crimes.

The Defence Secretary further appreciated the Australian Government’s assistance extended to Sri Lanka in many areas including legislative and law enforcement, intelligence gathering, vessel monitoring and sharing of information in the concerned areas.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Return and Readmission of Persons is also scheduled to be signed between the two countries in the near future.

Sri Lanka will host the Seventh JWG in Colombo next year.
