President Maithripala Sirisena today (24) instructed government officials to take immediate measures to distribute relief packages for those affected by the inclement weather, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.
Addressing a meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat, the President has said that he would intervene to obtain necessary funds from the Finance Ministry.
The President has also instructed to evacuate people from landslide-prone areas with the assistance of armed forces.
Meanwhile, issuing a press release, the Department of Government Information (DGI) said that in the Galle district, a total of 9,592 people covering 11 Divisional Secretariats have so far been compensated with disaster relief.
According to the situation report issued by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) this afternoon, 13,926 people belonging to 3,529 families have been affected by floods in Galle and Matara districts.
