As the New Year weekend draws near Sri Lankans baking in the heat can expect some relief with showers and thundershowers expected today.
According to the daily forecast of the meteorological department, rain is predicted in several areas in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Uva, North-western and Western provinces and in Batticaloa, Ampara and Mannar districts.
Showers or thunderstorms are expected after 2 p.m. in Anuradhapura and Vavuniya districts.
Met dept also warns that fairly heavy falls about 75 mm can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Southern provinces and in Kaluthara district.
These areas can experience severe lightning activity the Weathermen warn.
According to Met Dept reports during the past 24 hours up to 8.30 a.m yesterday, the maximum amount of rainfall was reported from Katugasthota which was 31.4 mm.
From the hydro catchment areas, the maximum rainfall was reported from Maussakele which is 23 mm. But catchment areas in Victoria, Randenigala, Rantambe, Ukuwela, Samanala wewa and Kukuleganga haven’t received any rainfall during the period.
