A ‘Green Society Act’ will be presented in Parliament to facilitate a bipartisan approach to protecting the environment in the face of rising global temperatures, Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera said.
Speaking at the launch of a Rs. 450 million environment protection program in Colombo on Monday (8 July) the Minister highlighted the importance of reforestation, reduction of emissions and the dangers of polythene and plastic in order to combat global warming.
Titled ‘Green Club’, the community based initiative is expected to empower the public to protect the environment, a press release said. The launch event, held at the Colombo Hilton, was also attended by all divisional secretaries of the island.
Speaking at the event, Minister Samaraweera said the goal of the programme is to make Sri Lankans at the village level a part of the global drive to protect the planet.
