The Government will not grant permission to operate Sharia universities in Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday (20).
Speaking at a discussion held at Temple Trees following the handover of a report by a committee led by Prof. Ashu Marasinghe on Sharia universities and Madrasas in Sri Lanka, Wickremesinghe said there is no legal basis to run such a university. The Government can only grant approval for degree offering institutions, he added.
Wickremesinghe also said that amendments will be made to section 9(A) of the Universities Act to prevent Sharia Universities from coming into operation in the future.
The Government has also decided to bring Madrasa schools under the Education Ministry, said the Premier, adding that some education activities should be planned in consultation with the Muslim Affairs Ministry.
The Prime Minister also urged school students to continue their usual school activities as the security situation has come back to normal.
