Showers and winds will increase over the island over the following days as the severe cyclonic storm ‘FANI’ continues to intensify, the Department of Meteorology said.
‘FANI’ is currently located about 640 km east-northeast of Trincomalee and it is likely to further strengthen into a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ over the next 12 hours.
Showers or thundershowers are expected across the island while heavy rainfalls above 150 mm can be expected in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Western, North-western, and Uva provinces, and in the Ampara district, according to the Met department.
Strong winds up to 60 – 70 km/h are expected across the country particularly in the central hills, Northern, North Central, Northwestern and Southern provinces and in Trincomalee and Ampara districts.
The Met Department urges the public, naval, and fishing communities to pay close attention to future advisories issued by the department.
