One dead thousands affected due to heavy rains

Schools are closed tomorrow 24 Sept and 25 Sept in Galle and Matara ad landslide warnings were issued to three districts

At least one person is dead and 5669 people affected by heavy rain and strong winds in several parts of the country.

The Disaster Management Centre reported that the death was reported from Batticoloa.

All schools in the Matara and Galle districts are closed tomorrow and the day after due to the weather.

Meanwhile the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) issued early landslide warnings to Kalutara, Kegalle and Galle districts this afternoon (23) due to the prevailing weather condition across the island.

Accordingly, the residents of Agalawatta, Bulathsinhala, Dodangoda, Ingiriya, Mathugama, Palindanuwara, Walallawita Divisional secretariats in Kalutara district and residents of Yatiyanthota Divisional secretariat divisions of Kegalle district are requested to be vigilant of landslides.

The NBRO further warned the residents of Elpitiya, Galle Four Gravets, Imaduwa, Nagoda, Neluwa, Niyagma, Thawalama Divisional secretariat divisions in Galle district to be vigilant of landslides.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) advises the residents of Southern province to be alert over the rising water levels in Gin and Nilawala rivers due to heavy rains prevailing in the province.
