The Government will provide maximum assistance to modernise and develop the carpentry industry whilst protecting the island’s forest cover, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

Addressing a group of carpenters from Moratuwa yesterday (10), Wickremesinghe said the country’s entire forest cover is only 28 per cent at present and it may drop further if the usage of chainsaws continues to increase.

“We started modernising the carpentry industry in 2003, but unfortunately we could not continue this programme. We can obtain the assistance of the Moratuwa University and AIT Institute to modernise the traditional carpentry industry,” he said.

The Prime Minister further said that President Sirisena recently spoke on how to protect the forests and ‘talked only on the banning of mobile saw mills and the use of chainsaws.’
