During the first quarter of 2019, the total number of employed persons in Sri Lanka is estimated at about 8.2 million. Of which, about 47.1 per cent are engaged in the Service sector, 28.3 per cent in Industries sector and 24.7 per cent in the Agriculture sector.
According to a statement released by the Government Department of Information, compared to the 1st quarter of 2018, an increase in employment numbers can be observed in the service and industry sectors in the 1st quarter of 2019.
“The majority of the workforce are private-sector employees followed by own-account workers,” it states.
Further, it states that the highest employment share is in the service sector and this is true for both males and females, while the lowest shares are for the agriculture sector. Among employed females, 26.5 per cent is in the agriculture sector while this share is 23.7 per cent for males.
It also states that the number of unemployed persons is estimated at 399,784 during the first quarter of 2019. The unemployment rate for the first quarter of 2019 is 4.7 per cent. The overall unemployment rate reported for females is 6.9 per cent and it is 3.4 per cent for males.
