The Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) has highlighted 109 state institutions that have shown high performance in 10 categories compared to previous years.

This is according to an assessment program carried out on adoption of financial and performance regulations based on accounts of the financial year of 2017.

An award ceremony was held on Friday (5 July) organised by COPA to recognise institutions that have performed extraordinarily in their corresponding categories from a total of 838 State institutions examined by COPA in 2017.

COPA Chairman MP Lasantha Alagiyawanna told journalists last week that the assessment program has been extremely productive and since 2015, the 104 institutions that received below a 50% grading have now been brought to just 11 institutions as of the assessment of 2017. The number of institutions over 90% has been increased to 139 institutions.

“The COPE and COPA usually conduct inquiries which are similar to a postmortem. We investigate only after a case of corruption has taken place, and sometimes these investigations take ages to complete,” he said.

According to the Auditor General W. P. C. Wickremeratne, 92%  of the State institutions have submitted financial statements for the year 2018 to the AG’s department by the end of June.

He further noted that this could be considered as the best performance ever recorded in financial efficiency of the Government entities in Sri Lanka.
