The Army Lance Corporal who shot and killed a parent at a school in Akmeemana on Thursday is to be handed over to his Regiment, the Police Media spokesman’s office said.
As the incident took place under Emergency Regulations, Police have been asked to seek the Attorney General’s advice on the matter.
Until the AG’s report comes, the soldier will be held by the Army.
The soldier was deployed at the school under Emergency Regulations.
In the meantime police will conduct investigations as per civilian rules.
The Army is also conducting a routine inquiry into the incident, Army spokesman Brigadier Sumith Atapattu told RepublicNext.
He said the inquiry will “find out what happened.”
The victim, 39-year old Udaya Pradeep Kumara, had been asked to come to the school, the Manawela Upananda Primary, to pick up his son whom the authorities had said was sick.
According to the Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunesekara, Kumara had entered through the school gate and had been stopped from proceeding further by the soldier.
Gunesekara says the two had argued and Kumara, a retired Naval rating, had allegedly tried to grab the soldier’s weapon.
At that stage he had been shot. Kumara’s daughter had been with him as he fell.
Another parent had rushed him to the Karapitiya hospital but he was found dead on arrival.
