Intelligence Chief forced to quit

Intelligence Chief Sisira Mendis testifying at the Parliamentary Select Committee

Chief of National Intelligence Retired DIG Sisira Mendis has resigned citing “health reasons,” official sources said.

These sources said that Mendis had quit because of “heavy political pressure.”

The veteran policeman was among the officials who testified before the Parliamentary Select Committee probing the Easter Sunday attacks.

In his testimony, Mendis said the Intelligence community was aware of the threat to Churches, Hotels and the Indian High Commission.

However, he told the committee that the matter had not been brought up for discussion at the right time.
