Gota and seven others acquitted in Avant-Garde case

Gotabaya Rajapaksa and seven others who were indicted by the Bribery Commission have been released by the Colombo Chief Magistrate.

This is subsequent to a decision by the Court of Appeal that the filing in the Magistrate’s Court was incorrect in Law.

After a copy of the verdict of the Court of Appeal was filed in the Magistrate’s Court chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne ruled that the accused be released.

In this case Rajapaksa and others were charged with causing a loss of Rs. 11.4 billion by permitting Avant Garde Maritime Services to garner illegal profits at the expense of the government.
