Compensation for property damaged in Negombo

Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith meeting Muslim community leaders in Negombo this morning/Archbishop’s House

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has ordered that compensation be paid to those whose properties were damaged during a clash between two groups in Negombo last night.

In a press release the Premier’s office said officials would be producing an estimate for the damage shortly.

Meanwhile the Archbishop of Colombo, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith and the President of the All Ceylon Jamiyyatul Ulema visited Negombo today and met with the groups that clashed yesterday.

A police curfew that was imposed in the area after the incident was lifted at 7 am today.

The Cardinal met the Catholic and Muslim communities in Negombo and visited some mosques for further discussions, Fr. Edmond Thillekeratne spokesman  for the Archdiocese of Colombo told RepublicNext.

Participating in a press conference, Cardinal Ranjith also requested the Government to keep all liquor shops closed in Negombo area since the drunkenness of some people lead to the clashes situation which occurred yesterday.
