Police have been instructed to immediately arrest two senior officials charged in the Avant Garde illegal floating Armoury case and produce them before a Magistrate.

The Attorney General Dappula de Livera has written to the Acting Inspector General of Police C D Wickremaratne to arrest current Secretary to the Police Commission Saman Dissanayake and former Senior Assistant Secretary to the Ministry of Defense Damayanthi Jayaratne in this case.

The AG’s instructions are to arrest them within the next 24 hours.

Dissanayake was Senior Additional Secretary in the Defense Ministry when the Avant Garde floating armoury was approved of.

The Bribery Commission has charged that by operating this illegal armoury a sum of Rs 11.4 billion has been defrauded and lost to the government.

Earlier today the Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake rejected an anticipatory bail application filed by former Additional Defence Secretary Dissanayake.

Dissanayake had filed an anticipatory bail application seeking an order to release him on bail if he was arrested over the Avant Garde illegal floating armoury case.

The AG wants Avant Garde Chairman Nissanka Senadipathi and seven others, including Dissanayake arrested in connection with the offences they had allegedly committed under the Firearms Ordinance, the Explosives Act, as well as the Penal Code, in the Avant Garde Maritime Services’ floating armoury case.
